Building a brand in wood

Consultation & Research

Megan had been developing a passion for making bespoke furniture using exotic hard woods, and was now ready to take it to the next level, forming a business.

Starting out with an exploration meeting, we dived into the branding process:

  • defining her business and vision

  • her beliefs and values

  • the kind of audience she was looking for

  • plus her huge passion for all things Hawaii

Combined with research, I collated together the key specifications and requirements. Creating a series of mood boards to represent each of the points, giving clear direction, and expression of the feel, we wanted the brand to hold.

Design

The design challenge, to create a contemporaty, clean mark, away from the traditional dusty cliches around wood work.

After brainstorming the problem, I surfaced a few core themes to explore. Utilising various materials, I experimented with numourous ideas, shapes, textures, colours and typography.

Throughout the process, refining and honing the visuals in to represent the overall vision.

The Outcome

The final logo brings everything together – the elements of wood and layers, combined with the character and spirit of Hawaii, in a clean, contemporary and unique mark. Alongside the main logo, there are 3 versions inspired by the colours of Hawaiin sunsets.

The business cards focus on the range of rich exotic wood grains used on each piece. Additionally, we were looking for a way to mark each piece, which lead to creating a wood burning stamp, that could apply the branding directing to the product.
